Texas Historical Commission is one of the first 45 recipients of grant funding through the Preserve America initiative. The first round of Preserve America grants provide $3.5 million for projects in 28 states representing all regions of the country.
On March 9, 2006 the THC was granted $147,000 to develop a new training and assistance component of the Texas Heritage Trails Program. The goal of the project is to provide in-depth training for community representatives on the successful development of heritage tourism.

The workshop component will be a three-series regional workshop program focused on site improvements for small museums and historic sites.
Workshops will be delivered through the 10 Texas Heritage Trail Regions resulting in a total of 30 workshops across the state.
The Texas Mountain Trail Region will host the THC Round III - Exhibit Development and Design Workshop in Alpine at the Museum of the Big Bend on Monday, October 15 from 8am to 5:30pm (lunch included).
