The town came into existence when competing railroads for a second (Southern) transcontinental railroad line came within 10 miles of one another in 1881. Jay Gould, famous railroad magnate and robber baron, drove a silver spike commemorating the event on Dec. 15th 1881.

Railroad and Transportation Museum of El Paso
Exhibits at the museum tell the story of transportation with vehicles, related equipment and model displays. These displays demonstrate how transportation enhanced the development of business and industry in our region.  The museum offers the 19th Century 4-4-0 locomotive, known locally as Engine No. 1.
